The Institute for the Study of Corporate Social Responsibility at Ryerson University* is pleased to present an online interactive zoom session, Reflections of a Former Corporate Sustainability Executive -- In conversation with Ross Gallinger (details below), on Friday, February 18, from 11 am to 12:30 pm (Toronto time).
When it comes to the question of corporate responsibility, the mining sector is a good example of an industry sector engaging in a particularly challenging high-wire act. On the "wealth creation" side of the tightrope, profit margins are tight, investors are demanding, and metals prices are volatile. Corporate responsibility considerations are balanced against these profit-oriented realities, with mining companies often operating in challenging outlying remote and comparatively pristine areas that bring the companies into contact with indigenous communities whose lifestyles, culture and worldviews may starkly contrast with those seeking to engage in large-scale industrial extractive activity.
The perspective of those individuals within mining corporations who are charged with the responsibility of protecting or furthering the interests of workers, communities and the environment -- the aforementioned corporate sustainability tightrope walkers, one could say -- is a perspective that does not often get aired.
As a now-retired mining executive with significant sustainability responsibilities in several companies and at a major Canadian industry association, Mr. Gallinger is uniquely qualified to shed light on the navigation of corporate environmental, social and governance issues. He has over 35 years of experience in managerial and operational roles in the mining industry in the Americas with extensive responsibilities in health, safety, environment and community relations portfolios. In addition to operations and managerial roles, Mr. Gallinger had executive roles at Yamana Gold, IAMGOLD Corporation and Placer Dome Inc and was the Executive Director for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. Mr. Gallinger holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of British Columbia, and is a Professional Agrologist.
Moderating the session will be Dr. Kernaghan Webb, Director of the Ryerson CSR Institute and a Law and Business professor in Ryerson University's Ted Rogers School of Management who is also cross appointed to the Law Faculty.
The talk is co-sponsored by the Ryerson Corporate Social Responsibility Student Association, the Ryerson Commerce and Government Association, and the Ryerson Law and Business Student Association.
