Negotiations continue with CUPE 233 and OPSEU 596

April 04, 2023

As shared last week, TMU is currently in negotiations with CUPE 233 and OPSEU 596 and remains committed to reaching a negotiated renewal of the collective agreements with both unions.

Since our last update, the university received notice that OPSEU 596 had requested a no board report. While we remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached with both unions, the university is completing contingency planning to plan for a possible labour disruption.

While we’ll provide more information as it becomes available, here are some key things our community should know now.

Classes and exams are moving ahead as scheduled

Our students are at the centre of everything we do and one of our top priorities is ensuring that we minimize any impact on their end of semester activities, exams and graduation.

All students are expected to attend classes as scheduled unless otherwise notified. In general, exams will take place in the format in which they are currently planned – in-person exams will remain in person and virtual exams will remain virtual. Any essential scheduling changes will be provided by your Faculty, but we encourage you to double check the final exam schedule on the Exams website ahead of time, as well as your email and D2L for updates.

Student academic success is important to us and we will continue to support you as you wrap up your requirements for this term. We are committed to minimizing any impact on students in the event of a strike. This includes prioritizing core activities, like learning, teaching and research; supports required for students living on campus; and operations that promote your health and safety.

Expectations for non-CUPE 233 or non-OPSEU 596 employees in the event of a strike

If a labour disruption occurs, picket lines may be established. It’s important to note that unless you are in a lawful strike position, faculty and staff are required to attend work and fulfill the obligations of their role

A strike by another union does not change these obligations and non-striking employees are required to report to work during a strike by employees in another union.

As a university and an employer, we respect the right of union employees to picket and protest within a culture of mutual respect. We ask our TMU community to treat striking employees with respect and courtesy. At the same time, it’s important to know that it is unlawful for any striking employee to intimidate or harass any non-striking individuals who are accessing the university.

Support available for students, faculty and staff

We understand that this time might be challenging for some.

Where can I find more information?

We encourage our community to monitor their email, as well as the Bargaining Updates website, which includes a Frequently Asked Questions section with more information.
