Student working in AERIAS lab

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) formed the Centre for Advancing Engineering, Research & Innovation in Aerospace (AERIAS), originally launched in 2003, by uniting two powerful aerospace engineering programs, an experiential learning/work-study program, with the TMU Downsview Facility, which conducts leading Research and Development (R&D).

We are also glad to announce that AERIAS is now part of the Downsview Aerospace Innovation & Research (DAIR) Hub, located in Toronto, Canada. AERIAS provides TMU students with a unique training opportunity by involving them in the aerospace industry.

AERIAS is a unique, project-based training program that connects exceptional TMU engineering students to the aforementioned leading Canadian Aerospace companies who have recognized the value of the contribution of such a workforce. A variety of TMU students within the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and business are also hired. AERIAS is a unique model of partnership, bringing together Canada's main Aerospace firms that are recognized as world leaders in their respective domains with TMU. By trusting AERIAS participants with important projects, our industry partners give our students the opportunity to drive change in areas like design and manufacturing, and to add value to the companies they work for. The AERIAS program prepares its students for future careers within the Aerospace industry. Some aspects that make AERIAS unique and more effective is the fact that AERIAS projects are defined in advance with clear statements of work that include scope, deliverables, milestones, and definition of skills required to carry out the tasks. Projects cover areas such as design, analysis, simulation, production planning, testing, all through to maintenance and customer support. Application coverage includes that of aircrafts, engines, landing gear, avionics, flight simulation, part manufacturing, MRO, etc.

Professor and Students working in the lab

AERIAS receives placement job postings year-round from a duration of 4-months to 16-months (500 to 2400 hours) within the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada. The work positions are required to be full-time, and can be work-from-home, on-site, or both. The program includes the placement opportunity, an annual publication, company partners board meeting, an annual Recognition Night (event), student final presentations (event), and one-on-one end of placement student evaluation. These are incorporated into the program to enhance better student participati

Toronto Metropolitan University’s AERIAS Centre works in unison with leading aerospace companies to reduce the financial burden of research and development. This change is part of our efforts to provide cost-effective talent and flexible workforce support, research and alternative funding opportunities, and risk mitigation services. 2024 marks the 21st season of AERIAS providing Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) students with a unique model of project-based training considered by many as one of the best in the Canadian academic domain.
