The Carrot Common (CC) affords a unique opportunity to create a flagship living roof garden and urban agriculture space in the heart of Toronto’s Greektown. CC is, a mixed-use development in the heart of Toronto’s Greektown that includes 17 retail and dining establishments, office space and meeting rooms. With the Big Carrot food store – one of the largest alternative food stores in Toronto, operating as a worker-owned co-operative – acting as anchor, CC is a two-storey building with a leafy courtyard. CC is creating a flagship living roof garden and urban agriculture space called the Carrot Green Roof. The CC rooftop served as a restaurant patio from 1989 to 1996. In 1996, a design charrette to create a roof garden resulted in the transformation of the roof into a green oasis, with deck areas and diverse plantings. In 2008, major roof leaks occurred.
After two years of planning, a new design charrette consultation with many stakeholders, fundraising and detail design, the Carrot Green Roof & Garden Project is complete. It’s implementation was led by Carrot Cache, the Big Carrot’s non-profit arm, along with a number of community associates.
Approximately 750 m2 of rooftop will accommodates a variety of uses. Enclosed structures on the rooftop will provide an educational center and community event venue. One part is will be an ‘extensive’ green roof whereas other parts will include a large deck, with intensive gardens, to serve as a green space for community use. The other fixed ‘green’ assets of this project will include: a rainwater harvesting system, a composting system tied to the Big Carrot food store below, a solar thermal power system, container gardens, vertical gardens and biodiversity enhancements. The plan is to develop the Carrot Green Roof & Garden as a ‘Learning Hub’ – a center for sharing knowledge and experience on green roofs, particularly among smaller community-based groups. This proposal aims to deliver ecology-related educational programming and exhibits for the wider community, including techniques for waste management, rainwater harvesting, soil substrates testing and vegetable growing methods.

Carrot Common (CC) est un ensemble polyvalent situé au cœur du Greektown à Toronto qui abrite 17 établissements commerciaux et gastronomiques, des bureaux et des salles de réunion. Comprenant Big Carrot – un des plus grands magasins d’alimentation « alternative » de Toronto, qui fonctionne en tant que coopérative solidaire appartenant à ses employés –, CC est un bâtiment de deux étages avec une cour arborée. CC possède un jardin sur le toit « vivant » et crée un espace voué à l’agriculture urbaine appelé Carrot Green Roof. Le toit de CC a servi de terrasse de restaurant de 1989 à 1996. En 1996, différentes sessions sur la conception d’un jardin en hauteur ont abouti à la transformation du toit en un oasis de verdure, avec des terrasses et des plantations diverses. En 2008, le toit a souffert d’importantes fuites.
Après deux années de planification, une nouvelle charette d’aménagement rassemblant de nombreux acteurs, une collecte de fonds et une conception détaillée, le projet « Carrot Green Roof & Garden » arrive à terme, sous la direction de Carrot Cache, la branche non lucrative de Big Carrot, avec la participation d’un certain nombre de partenaires locaux.
Une surface d’environ 750 m2 de toit sert à différentes activités. Des structures fermées permettent d’accueillir un centre d’enseignement et un lieu de rassemblement pour le quartier. Il y a un toit vert « extensif » et d’autres zones comprenant notamment une grande terrasse, avec des jardins intensifs, pour servir d’espace vert aux habitants du quartier. Le projet comprend également d’autres éléments « verts », tels qu’un système de collecte des eaux de pluie, un système de compostage en lien avec le magasin d’alimentation Big Carrot situé au-dessous, un système de production d’énergie thermosolaire, des bacs de jardinage ainsi que des jardins verticaux, et une promotion de la biodiversité. L’objectif est de faire de Carrot Green Roof un centre d’apprentissage destiné à partager les connaissances et les expériences sur les toits verts, particulièrement avec des petits groupes de quartier. Cette proposition vise à offrir des programmes et des expositions d’éducation environnementale à un large public, pour parler notamment de la gestion des déchets, de la récupération de l’eau de pluie, des essais sur les substrats de sol ou encore des méthodes pour cultiver les légumes.
