Anthony began his research as a research assistant in the summer of 2008
investigating the effect of calcium on the microstructure and mechanical
properties on lost foam cast AE42 magnesium alloy. The study aimed at improving
the tensile properties of AE42 at ambient temperature and above 150 °C. Anthony
has also conducted research on the effect of silicon on the tensile properties
of AE42 using the lost foam casting method. The aim of this research was to
determine the phases that form in the Mg-Al-RE-Si system and relate the
microstructure to the mechanical properties. The effect of silicon on fluidity
of AE42 will also be examined since silicon has been shown to improve the
fluidity for other magnesium alloys such as AZ91.
