Academic Standing

The Department of Sociology adheres to the university policy on Undergraduate Course Grading, Academic Program Standing and Eligibility to Graduate.

The Fresh Start program is designed for students who have been 'Required to Withdraw' from their program of study. Learn more about the Fresh Start program.  

As per Section 7.4.2 of the university’s policy on Undergraduate Course Grading, Academic Program Standing and Eligibility to Graduate, students with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.00 to 1.66 are assigned a probationary standing.

Students who receive a probationary standing are encouraged to consult the information on Academic Probation developed by the Student Experience Centre, and are encouraged to attend a ‘Back on Track’: Probationary Workshop.

As per Section 7.4.4 of the university’s policy on Undergraduate Course Grading, Academic Program Standing and Eligibility to Graduate, students will be required to withdraw from their program for any one of the following reasons:

  1. a CGPA of less than 1.00 (except students enrolled for their first semester);
  2. a term GPA below 1.67 while on probation;
  3. violation of a Probationary Contract (including unauthorized changes to the contract or failure to negotiate a Probationary Contract)

Students may also want to investigate participating in the Fresh Start Program.

Sociology students who are considering voluntarily leaving the program should speak with the Program Administrator or the Undergraduate Program Director before they stop attending classes.
