Research Centres

TMU sociologists are active in many research institutes, centres, and groups, which reflect our diverse research expertise.

The Yellowhead Institute is a First Nation-led research centre that generates critical policy perspectives in support of First Nation jurisdiction. The Institute offers accessible resources for communities in their pursuit of self-determination.

The Centre for Studies in Food Security (CSFS) works to promote food security through research, dissemination, education, community action, and professional practice. They take an interdisciplinary and systemic approach to social justice, environmental sustainability, health, and socio-cultural aspects of food security.

The Food Health Ecosystems Lab investigates human health in relation to food and ecosystems. They generate data to shed light on the social and political implications of the ways that health is connected to complex natural systems, with the aim of supporting just and sustainable food systems.

The Centre for Immigration and Settlement (RCIS) aims to be a leader in the transdisciplinary exploration of international migration, integration, and diaspora and refugee studies. In addition to supporting research in these areas, the Centre’s mission includes mentoring students and consolidating the university’s reputation as the pre‐eminent site of knowledge development and exchange with governments, community organizations, and other academics.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Studies Centre is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of the culture, history, literature, politics, and societies in the Middle East and North Africa and of diasporic populations from the MENA region in North America and Europe.
