Creative Performance Studies

Johnny Wu is a bilingual Taiwanese Canadian interdisciplinary performer and creator. Having graduated with a double major in Theatre performance and Criminology from Simon Fraser University, Johnny's work seeks to investigate humanity through story-telling with a social justice angle. Johnny believes that story-telling, on stage or screen, is a craft rooted in compassion. The word compassion comes into the English language by way of the Latin root “passio”, which means to suffer, paired with the Latin prefix “com”, meaning together - to suffer together. Story-telling invites the participants to submerge themselves into the narrative and experience the joys and traumas firsthand allowing for more profound understanding - an element critical to eliciting social change. Understanding is the key to change and story-telling is the hand that turns the key. Johnny specializes in cross-cultural collaborations, site-specific theatre, devised theatre and contemporary theatre. As an educator, Johnny prompts himself and others to examine the ways our bodies, our identities, our culture and the space we occupy - temporal and physical - inspire diverse methods of expression. Moreover, how to nature marginalized creatives to capitalize on their experiences and identity in a celebratory manner in which they achieve success because of it not in spite of it.
