Spotlight

Working at the intersection of engineering and mathematics, Bill Lin is an expert in dynamical system theory. He uses advanced mathematical techniques to study fluctuations in temporal systems and reveal hidden patterns. “Dynamical systems are basically everything we see around us,” he says.

Lin’s broadly applicable work has led him to systems as abstract as a person’s state of mind to those as concrete as the trajectory of an object in flight. He has also engaged in diverse projects such as studying changes in heart rates and brainwaves and analyzing equity markets like the New York Stock Exchange. “My work has shown me that everything changes in time,” he says. “I am constantly reminded that things are not what they appear to be.”

“My work is humbling because it never ceases to reveal counterintuitive outcomes.”
