Requiring students to work in groups is becoming increasingly popular as professors seek to deviate from the traditional “chalk-and-talk” model. Facilitating group work is a strong challenge for an instructor. Successful group work is a positive experience for students as it foreshadows real world applications beyond academia. However, students bring unique skills to the group work dynamic and conflicts may arise, which hinders participation and calls into question whether the final product is a combined effort across members. This workshop demonstrates best practices across group work and instructor facilitation – including methods that raise the probability of complete participation and endow students with conflict management skills relevant for academia and beyond.
