Awards & Scholarships

The Department of English offers various awards and grants to support undergraduate education and recognize excellence in its programs. The awards celebrate the students' achievements and contributions to the English Department.

First Year English Essay Award This award is given to a first-year student who has written the best essay in ENG 110 or ENG 208. The award is available to students enrolled in the BA English or English double major programs.  Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19. Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee. There can be only one submission per student. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June. $500 Apply on AwardSpring - applications open in November.
Roberta Imboden Memorial Essay Award

This annual award is given to a third- or fourth-year BA English or English double-major program student who has written the best essay in an English course.  Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19.  Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee. There can be only one submission per student. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June.

Senior English Research Essay Award

This annual award is given to a fourth-year student who has written the best research essay in ENG 904 or ENG 910. The award is available to students enrolled in either the BA English program or the English double major programs. Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19.  Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee.  The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June.

Creative Writing Award - Prose

This annual award is given to the undergraduate student who has produced the most outstanding sample of creative writing prose in an English course. The award is available to students enrolled in either the BA English or English double major programs. Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19. Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee. There can be only one submission per student. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June.

Creative Writing Award - Poetry

This annual award is given to the undergraduate student who has produced the most outstanding sample of creative writing poetry in an English course. The award is available to students enrolled in either the BA English or English double major programs. Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19. Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee. There can be only one submission per student. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June.

Innovative Media Award This annual award is given to an outstanding English course project that extends the boundaries of the traditional academic essay using digital, visual, sound, performance, material and/or other cultural forms. The award is available to students enrolled in either the BA English or English double major programs.  Students apply via AwardSpring by May 19. Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee. There can be only one submission per student. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June $500 Apply on AwardSpring - applications open in November.
BA English Student Life Award This annual award celebrates the achievements of one student who has made an outstanding contribution to the life, activities, and endeavours of the English department. The award is available to students of all years enrolled in either the BA English or English double major programs. Candidates apply via AwardSpring by May 19.  Submissions will be vetted by the Awards Committee, with input from the Program Director and Program Administrator. The award winner will be notified by the Awards Committee in June. $500 Apply on AwardSpring - applications open in November.
BA English Academic Achievement Scholarships These four annual scholarships are granted to the students in the BA English or a English double major program who attained the highest cumulative Grade Point Average in a given year, with one scholarship designated for a student in each of the first, second, third, and fourth years of the program. To be eligible, the student must have completed at least two ENG courses in that academic year, and at least 4 courses in each of the fall and winter terms. In the case of a tie, the scholarship amount will be divided among the scholarship winners. $500 No application necessary - qualified students will be notified.  Students must have an AwardSpring profile.
Discovery Grant Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for a grant of up to $500 in support of forthcoming scholarly/community/publishing projects (but not travel expenses). Grants are available to students enrolled in the BA English program, English double major programs and the MA program in Literatures of Modernity. Applications with budgets can be submitted for consideration twice per academic year – November 30 and March 1 (or, should the date fall on a weekend or holiday, on the next university business day).  A student can serve as the head applicant on only one application per academic year. Grants will be adjudicated by the Awards Committee, in consultation with the Undergraduate and Graduate Directors and Department Chair on an individual basis. The Department will support as many worthy applications as annual budget permits. $500 Contact Program Administrator for application
