Using Dragon Dictation with Awardspring
Ensure Dragon is Working Properly
- Recommended browser: Google Chrome
- Required browser extension: Ensure Dragon Chrome extension, external link, opens in new window is installed to ensure better usability when navigating websites.
If Dragon has trouble listening or understanding specific words, use the Accuracy Center utilities. Go to Tools > Accuracy Center > Improve recognition of word or phrase.
Navigation
Most buttons and links on the page can be accessed by commanding Dragon to click their label.
If that ever fails, you can ask Dragon to click an element such as a text link or an image. Dragon will select the element on screen. If there are many elements of that similar property, Dragon will ask you to choose from the selection.
Field Types

- “Click Text Field”
- Shows options to select text fields on screen.
- “Click department”
- You also can select text boxes by calling keywords in the label.
Caution
- Dictated text does not always get saved by AwardSpring due to the website not detecting changes.
- To fix this, after dictating your answer, say “press space” and then say “press backspace” to force the website to update their values.

- A date picker as shown in the picture is not accessible by Dragon, so you must manually speak out the answer.
- Date is in the format (mm/dd/yyyy).
- For single digit numbers you must say “Numeral zero <number>” and for the rest of the numbers you can dictate as usual.
For example, to enter 5th March 2020, you must say the following:
- “Numeral 03”
- “Slash”
- “Numeral 05”
- “Slash”
- “Two thousand”

- “Click checkbox” usually lets you choose between the checkboxes on screen
Caution
- Currently, checkboxes on AwardSpring are not accessible by Dragon.
- You can “tab” and “press shift tab” to navigate towards the checkbox and say “press space” to toggle a checkbox
- “Tab” is keyboard button that allows users to navigate through link or components on a website.
- “Shift + tab” is a keyboard shortcut that allows users to navigate backwards.
Reaching Inaccessible Buttons
If you have issues using commands to complete any of the tasks above, you can mimic the movement of a mouse using these two methods:
Once the cursor starts moving, you can command it to “move faster” or “stop”.
After that, say “click”, and Dragon will perform a mouse click based on the location of your cursor.
Dragon creates a 3x3 grid to quickly move your cursor to different sections on the screen.
Dragon presents a new smaller grid after you select a section in a grid for better accuracy. Once you have your mouse in place, you can say “click” and a mouse click at the cursor will take place.
