Exams: Prepare to deliver Makeup Exams using Brightspace

Prepare to deliver makeup exams using D2L Brightspace

Using tools within or integrated with D2L Brightspace, you can administer a variety of assessments. The method(s) to administer a make-up exam will vary, depending on the tool used.

On this page you will find a collection of resources to follow along with when designing and setting up your makeup exam.

If you would like support when facilitating make-up exams, please visit the Make-Up Test Centre.

 Getting Started: Set up the makeup exam

Using options within Akindi, you can provide students with a different time, additional attempts, or a separate bubble sheet.

All options publish the student's score to the existing grade item.

Akindi Online

Accomodation settings can be enabled on an individual level to provide a different date or time, or an additional attempt.

Akindi Bubble Sheet

Students can complete a second separate version or the same assessment on their bubble response sheet. The instructor will have to scan and upload the makeup exam sheets themselves.

 Time-Based Accommodations

As this assessment is completed on paper, the timing is not managed by the tool, but through the facilitation of the exam.

 Make-up Test or Rewrites in the Test Centre

For students writing bubble-sheet exams in the Test Centre, a course instructor must upload the completed exam sheets into the Akindi Dashboard themselves.

Note for Make-up Exams: If a second answer sheet is uploaded for a student, it will overwrite the earlier submission and automatically be scored towards the connected grade item.

 If the student is writing the same exam as their peers:

Special Access settings can be set to allow students to complete the same assessment, at a different date/time. This option publishes the student's score to the existing grade item.

 If the student is writing an alternative version of the exam:

If you would like the makeup to be an entirely separate assessment, you can duplicate and modify your assessment. This can be executed by:

  • Navigating to Assessment > Assignments
  • Clicking the arrow beside the name of the original assignment
  • Selecting "Copy" from the list of options
  • Name the new version of the assessment appropriately
  • Each will be associated with a different grade item (see below).

For the duplicated version, use the "Only Users with Special Access" option to restrict access to the make-up to selected students.

 If the student is writing the same quiz as their peers:

Special Access settings can be set to allow students to complete the same assessment at a different date/time or additional attempts. This option publishes the student's score to the existing grade item.

 If the student is writing an alternative version of the exam:

If you would like the makeup to be an entirely separate assessment, you can create an all-new quiz and restrict it to just specific users. Be sure to name the new version of the assessment appropriately, and associate each with a different grade item (see below).

For the duplicated version, use the "Only Users with Special Access" option to restrict access to the make-up to selected students.

A makeup assessment will be created as a separate Crowdmark assessment. Each will be associated with a different grade item (see below for steps to include both versions in your Final Grade calculation).

 Including Multiple Versions of an Exam in Grade Calculations

As each Grade Item can only be associated with one assessment, small changes will be required to support multiple versions of the same exam when calculating the final grade. To do this:

  • Create a Grade Category weighted at the total course weight of the exam.
  • Enable automated dropping of the lowest grade(s).
    • E.g. If three versions of the exam exist, but each student has only completed one version, the two lowest marks should be dropped.
  • For exams within Brightspace:
  • For Exams using Third Party Tools that sync Grades to Brightspace:
    • When each version of the exam is synced, it will create a new grade item.
    • Edit each Grade Item, and associate them with the Grade Category. This can be completed by clicking the drop-down beside the name of the Grade Item, then selecting the category from the Category drop-down list.

 Modifying the Format of a Makeup Exam

Changing the method of delivery

If your exam was designed to be administered in person but needs to be modified to to support remote assessment for the makeup, a few approaches can be considered. The method of online assessment will vary depending on the style of your in-person assessment. Please select the option that is most relevant to your assessment to learn more:

Presenting a unique set of questions

If your exam was designed to be quiz-styled and administered online, you can use the platform to automate the creation of individualised exams. Through pooled and randomised questions, each attempt can be generated as students begin.
