Belonging in community is an important part of your journey as an international student and newcomer to Canada. For you, that means needing a space where you can meet fellow newcomers, attend events, and receive dedicated support. International Student Support (ISS) at Toronto Metropolitan University is the place to do that! Learn more about ISS in the following Q&A!

What is ISS?
ISS:
We are a team of advisors and facilitators whose mission is to foster a sense of belonging and community for all students who are new to Canada as well as for those students seeking a global experience on campus. We welcome and support newcomers to Canada as they adjust to the new Canadian environment and culture.

How do you support international students?
ISS:
International Student Support will connect you to Toronto Metropolitan University’s vibrant campus community, and support you in achieving your academic, personal, and professional goals. From immigration support to cultural and social support, we have your back!

What type of events and services do you host for students?
ISS:
Our International Student Experience Facilitators are on board to make your journey all the more exciting through facilitatedprogramming and events that are tailored with you in mind including settlement advising, health insurance information sessions, game nights, and more.

Who can join your events and use your services?
ISS:
ISS welcomes all international students and newcomers. While newcomer students may not share the same status, the common experience of settling in a new country and studying at Toronto Metropolitan University brings them together. We define a newcomer student as an individual who has been in Canada for five years or less. Additionally, ISS would be pleased to support students who self-identify as newcomers to Canada.

Are there student involvement opportunities at ISS?
ISS:
There are many opportunities to get involved with ISS initiatives and events that are created with your social, cultural, and transitional needs in mind. Check out the Cultural Connections Online Modules and register for our upcoming events on the ISS ConnectRU page.

How do I connect with the team?
ISS:
Our team members come from diverse backgrounds and experiences just like you! Our International Student Advisors can help you through group immigration advising, drop-in hours and one-on-one personal development appointments. You can also connect with us through Welcome Appointments! These meetings will provide you with resources to guide you through your time at university and assist you in reaching your personal, academic, and professional goals. Book your Welcome Appointment by completing the  (google form) ISS Welcome Appointment Form. (external link)

What can I do if I’m experiencing challenges?
ISS:

During this meeting, we’ll work with you to help you identify your main challenges around academics, English language, finance, mental health or social transition, and develop a personalized action plan to address your concerns and help you.
