Message from the Chair

A message from the Chair on safely resuming in-person activities on campus

Dear Civil Engineering students,

After almost two years of academic lock-down, I am very excited that the campus is reopening for in-person learning. I fully understand the psychological challenges many of us are experiencing. But, as we have been continually assured, the university is confident that a return to our campus is safe. This assurance is reinforced by the practices and policies included in Toronto Metropolitan University’s multi-layered approach to safety on campus.

A return to in-person learning is in the best interest of students. We know that the collaboration and conversation that happens in classrooms and labs, the access to in-person supports both in the classroom and beyond, and the community and relationships created by on-campus extra-curricular activities are just a few of the benefits of returning to campus.

Please continue to visit our COVID-19 website for the most current information and find more specific information regarding lectures, labs, exams, student resources and office hours in the dropdown menus below.

I look forward to seeing you on campus.

Best regards,

Arnold Yuan
Chair, Department of Civil Engineering

Return to in-person learning key information

The Department of Civil Engineering is following the same timeline for the return to in-class learning, as announced by the FEAS Dean:

  • All graduate courses will resume in person on February 7, 2022.
  • 5th- to 8th-semester undergraduate courses currently being offered in the Winter term will resume in person on February 7, 2022.
  • All remaining 1st to 4th-semester undergraduate courses currently being offered in the Winter term will resume in person on February 28, 2022.
  • Orientation for all current first-year students and students who started their programs in the Fall of 2020 will occur the week of February 21, 2022.

Under exceptional circumstances that the Dean has reviewed, a few courses offered by the Department may have certain components staying online after the posted time. Please consult the course announcements or contact your course instructors for specific information about your courses.

Please note that instructors will not be asked to provide hybrid lectures or pre-recorded lectures after transitioning to in-person learning. Similarly, graduate assistants will not be asked to provide these resources for labs or tutorials.

  • Mid-term exams may take place in person or online. Please consult with your course instructors for details.
  • At this moment, final exams are expected to be conducted in person.
  • Graduate students’ thesis defence and comprehensive exams will be conducted virtually unless both the examination committee and the student want it done in person or in a hybrid mode.

Office hours may take place in person or online. Please consult with your course instructors for details.

The Graduate Computer Lab will remain in 24-7 virtual operational mode. Only research students with approved Safe SRC Plan have physical access to the lab computers. While staying in the lab, please maintain social distancing and wear face masks at all times.

This procedure will be for this semester only as a temporary measure. Please be reminded that it is likely that your remote access will be disconnected. So, save your work often. Please respect your fellow students.

Due to the two-metre physical distancing requirement for non-instructional spaces such as hallways and offices, the Civil Engineering administrative team will continue providing remote student academic support services with limited, by-appointment-only in-person services.

Effective February 7, Civil Engineering administrative staff will be in the office on a rotational basis. Please reach out to the appropriate team member for a consultation appointment or the student support service you require. The contact details are below.

The Office will be open for appointments and pick-up and drop-off services only Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
