Toronto Metropolitan University students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the fourth annual Black Excellence Graduation Celebration, taking place in-person for the very first time.

Join us in celebrating the incredible determination of this year’s Black graduating students. The event will begin with a recognition and celebration followed by a reception.

The theme of this year’s ceremony is: No bootstraps when you’re barefoot. Walk Good!

The theme is a tribute to Wes Hall’s memoir and builds on an address delivered by Karen Arthurton and Sharon Mclean at last year’s celebration. It encourages students to be resourceful, challenge harmful narratives and, ultimately, fail forward.

We will recognize Black graduating students who have committed to their dreams, balancing determination and self-compassion along the way.

Are you a self-identified Black graduating student?

If you are a graduating student who self-identifies as Black, we invite you to register by May 26 to have your name included in the Black Achievement Wall.

Graduating Black students who register will be provided with an exclusive Kente stole to commemorate their achievement courtesy of event organizers (with confirmation of graduation and while quantities last). Graduates will receive their Kente from a community elder while crossing the stage.

Please note that we will be celebrating students who graduated in fall (October 2022) as well as those graduating this spring (June 2023).

Closed captioning and ASL will be provided

Toronto Metropolitan University is committed to the accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities. If you require any additional accessibility accommodations to ensure your full participation, please let us know on the registration form or email blackexcellence@torontomu.ca.
