Prof. Stephanie Latty

Stephanie Latty comes to Ryerson from the University of Toronto, where she is a Ph.D Candidate in the Collaborative Women and Gender Studies Program in the Department of Social Justice Education. Stephanie’s SSHRC-funded doctoral research examines the media and legal discourses surrounding Black women and girls who have experienced state violence in Canada. More broadly, Stephanie’s interdisciplinary research focuses on questions of gender, race, carcerality and violence using decolonial, Black feminist and critical race perspectives.

Stephanie’s research has been published in the Critical Ethnic Studies Journal (with Megan Scribe, Alena Peters and Anthony Morgan) and The Lauryn Hill Reader (with Sefanit Habtom and Eve Tuck). Prior to higher education, Stephanie worked in the mental health field in front line, community education and policy capacities. She holds a Bachelors of Social Work from Laurentian University and a Masters of Social Work from Ryerson University. Stephanie is a member of the Board of Directors at Planned Parenthood Toronto and is the recipient of the Joseph Armand Bombardier Graduate Scholarship (2016-2019).
