Reflecting on the 2025 Metropolis International Summit
On October 2–3, 2025, the Metropolis International Summit, co-hosted by CERC Migration at Toronto Metropolitan University, brought together 200 participants, both in person in Toronto and online.
Representatives from civil society, government, and academia engaged in rich discussions on key migration topics, including solidarity cities, diaspora finance, and the impact of advanced digital technologies on migration research and policy. These conversations highlighted innovative approaches to addressing migration challenges and building inclusive, informed communities.

Keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Alejandro Portes, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Princeton University, and H.E. Amb. Amma Twum-Amoah, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development at the African Union. Their expertise set the stage for insightful discussion and knowledge exchange throughout the Summit.
The Summit also marked the introduction of Metropolis International’s new direction and membership model, emphasizing deeper global collaboration, ongoing engagement between members, and strengthened connections across research, policy, and practice. The network will serve as a hub for knowledge exchange, networking, and dialogue on migration.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, contributing to productive conversations, new connections, and being part of the new direction for Metropolis International.
