SOC 530
Blackness and Freedom
This course explores the impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the contradictions of freedom post-emancipation. How were Black nations indebted with freedom? Where could Black people live, work and commune once "free"? Concepts of rights and democracy are discussed in relation to the afterlife of slavery, spatial, physical and embodied erasures and surveillance of blackness. Also key is Black resistance and the everyday and global claims to Black freedom.
