Democracy & Democratic Engagement

At TMU’s Faculty of Arts, we recognize the need for strong democratic engagement to drive positive change in our society. We know that when everyone’s voices are heard and valued, when we are all part of the process and the conversation, democracies can create the transformational change we need. That’s why we have made democratic engagement a centrepiece of our faculty, supported by numerous initiatives.

  • We are home to the Democratic Engagement Exchange, (external link)  which is on a mission to build a vibrant and inclusive democracy, where everyone living in Canada can contribute to creating healthy communities and solving our most pressing challenges.
  • Our Faculty houses the Jarislowsky Democracy Chair, which brings thought leadership and public profile to pressing issues around democracy.
  • We host Canada’s first and only experiential for-credit Women in the House course, which equips students with both a theoretical and practical understanding of women in Canadian politics and intersectional policymaking processes.
  • We run an Innovations in Democratic Leadership program, which empowers participants to effect political change through Canada’s legislative institutions.
  • The Young Workers Rights Hub's mission is to support youth on the job. We promote young workers' awareness of your rights at work, how to exercise and expand them. We empower young workers to make work better, safer, and fairer. Find information, advice, other youth voices, and networks at the Hub. Make work work for youth!
  • The TMU Democracy Internship provides an opportunity for students to acquire valuable experience and develop practical skills through university-based initiatives, civic organizations and community partners working to strengthen democratic engagement,  institutions and practices in Canada.

Beyond these dedicated democracy initiatives, our focus on democratic engagement extends across our academic programs and student engagement initiatives. The Faculty of Arts empowers students, graduates and faculty members to become active local and global citizens and leaders who are catalysts for positive change in society and our communities.
